Observational drawing session 3

For todays task, the class were given black ink and paper as our tools to work with, with library books and a plant to use as refference.

This was divided in to two sessions, one for the books and one for the plant, both being our refference material for our work.

Kicking things off, i had decided that i would like to experiment with an ink wash to build tone within my drawings. The two outcomes from this werent the strongest in that sense, as i feel the wash is too light for the first image to really get the vibrancy of the highlights, whilst the second showsw promise, with a nice transition between the light and mid tones, but the shadow kind of ruins it by being far too dark.

To finish things off i worked with pure line work, a section i am certainly more comfortaqble with and, naturally became what i feel to be the strongest outcome.

Moving to the plants, i brought a rather intricate cactus for my subject. Feeling underwelmed with my ink wash, i decided to have another crack at it, blocking out all the shapes of the cactus, and adding drop shadow lines. A final touch was to ink all the spike sources, finalising the outcome and really giving it form. This is by far my favourite outcome and certainly one to keep.

My final work of the day, i moved to someone elses plant, in an attemt to mix linework and wash, drawing the individual prickles of the vines, and wash dots for the bulbs. This is quite a nice result but sadly and clearly, is an unifinished result. In saying that, there is still promise for what was created, it could certainly be implemented for a nice patern.
