Another idea already covered, i decided to work on the scene with Ms DH sat watching the televion with the Beasts sevred head in her room. With this one being an analogue outcome, i had to consider medium. I was pretty sure that i wanted to paint it, but was unure of what kind of paint to use, and even at that it would be worth trying out crayon.
So to have a little test of this, i drew three beast heads, as they will appear in the final GIF, and coloured them in Crayon, Watercolour and Gouache. So starting with crayon, i like it, quite textural but not overly so, my only issue is where the yellow has muddied with the original pencil line, leaving dirty looking trails. The watercolour is great, textural and even, also keeps the vibrancy of the crayon, my down side with this medium is its effect on the paper, warping and creasing it. That being said, if i remember to mount the final it will leviate that downside. Finally the gouache I just wasnt feeling, the colour is even, but to a point that it almost looks digital, too flat for what i want. The watercolour came out as a clear winner.
With that finished, i just had to ensure i was happy with the image choice. I decided to move the layout a little, get a more dynamic composition within the image, i also considered a panneled outcome that concentrates on the individual elemnts, as i am trying to convey a few things in one image. I felt this was too departed from the two existing gifs though, and followed the original idea. At the bottom i start to consider what could be on the tv, maybe because the actual fight between the characters isnt featured, this can be my means to show it, ill come back to that i a bit i think.
So i wanted to check the effect of a flickering tv real quick, rather than drawing the scene twice and colouring them differently, it would be best to just draught it digitally, create a tv/ light layer and just switch the colour of the layer. On top of this, it offers the opportunity to see the final scene in a close to final form, and must say im quite happy with it, verry happy with the composition, the flickering tv will catch the eye, the ear touching the screen will lead the eye from there to the beast head, following that town to the facial hair. This little tuft of hair will point the eye to the ciggarete smoke, whigh will lead to the ciggarete and in turn Ms DH who is holding said ciggarette.
Here's the lighting and smoke in motion, its looking good, getting excited for this one.
I thought it would be worthwhile attempting to differentiate the reflected light from the actual screen by making them lighter, i like it, centres the screen as a entry point. I can easily achieve this with a bit of tracing paper in the final result.
I had a spur of inspiration and decided to try adding textures, a pretty poor attemt, very rushed and i could do with a bit of practice, but that being said, the wallpaper looks good, i should paint some in the outcome
Im starting to think of the lighting and video on the screen of the TV, comming back to the skech, itll be a simple little animated linework of Ms DH harpooning the beast. The lighting will be on coloured paper which will sit behind a painted scene, this scene will have holes cut in to it for the light. Of all the pen colours i tried, black was by far the clearest, but just wasnt what i wanted, after that pink looked good on both but was quite unclear, ill have to do something in the digital stage to darken it probably.
Heres the scene, painted in watercolour as decided, the smoke will be cutout forms of tracing paper that will be replaced for each frame. The segments have been cut out for the light, revealing a layer of tacing paper that has been cut out a the actual screen, and underneath that the coloured paper, with the drawn fight.
A little look at some of the seperate elemnts.
And heres the first try, lacking the tracing paper elements
And then the final outcome, honestly couldnt be happier with it, my only issue is that the smoke being more prominent than i expected takes the eye from the screen rather than the beast, but you follow the smoke to Ms DH and then to the head so alls well and ends well, you still take in the whole scene.
