Kicking things off for 505, as a class, we were tasked to pick a specific practice that we would wish to follow for the unit, my pick being character and narrative. From this, we had to research the subject and present a presentation. Myself and Kyle did research on comic shops, taking a trip to all the shops in leeds, photographing them and taking to account their layouts, what products and kinds of work get priority.
The most interesting aspect was the layout used by forbidden planet, being by far the most prolific comic store chain in britain, they chose to prioritise the tat. There are two floors, where the toys and clothes are kept on the entry ground, whereas the comics are in a far dingier lower floor, that you kind of have to look for. What does this say about the market? Is tat where the money is to be made?
